Enjoy the rush and chill in Barrie, Canada

Heading over to Canada during the winter months? The City of Barrie is a fabulous winter escape spot, particularly for those who love to ski.  If you’re not into that kind of shredding don’t worry, there’s plenty to do if the rush of the slopes isn’t the downtime you had in mind. Here’s how to indulge your mind and body during a Barrie break…

Where to stay

The Westin Trillium house is at the base of the Blue Mountain Ski Resort, so it’s super convenient if you do plan to make a trip down the mountain. In fact, when it comes to activities you’ll be spoilt for choice – the hotel sits between Niagara Escarpment and the shores of Georgian Bay, which means hiking, biking and boating are all possibilities. If you prefer your water free-flowing rather than frozen, you’ll enjoy a splash at the water adventure park – Plunge! Here, hot tubs and pools will welcome you indoors and out, alongside slides and swings.  Still sound like too much hard work? Find peace at the Scandinavian bath experience at the hotel spa.

Where to eat

You’ll find a true taste of Ontarian hospitality in the heart of Barrie at Groovy Tuesday’s Bistro, a cosy little place with a great craft beer collection and a simple yet diverse menu that changes with the seasons. Warm up with a naan pizza or soup of the day and a cheeky glass of red then make room for a hearty stew or comforting pasta dish. Prices are a little more than you may find elsewhere in town but portions are good and the service is friendly.

Great read

Find a spot in one of the mountain cafes or next to the water to dip into Crow Lake, the first and award-winning novel from Canadian author Mary Lawson. The story is set in rural Northern Ontario and is a tale of tragedy and hardship, set against a changing landscape. Have some tissues to hand as you may find you shed a tear as you follow narrator Kate’s journey after the death of her parents.

Romantic Rendez-vous

If riding the ski lift together and matching après ski hot chocolates don’t fill your romantic quota, pack yourself a picnic and head to Centennial Park. This coldwater beach spot is a lovely walking spot with plenty of places to settle down for lunch. Take a walk round Lake Simcoe a bike ride across Kempenfelt Bay or head across it, in a boat. But beware; it gets very busy on weekends so you may want to visit midweek.

If you’re heading to Ontario you must try your hand at skiing for at least one day during your trip. Blue Mountain Village is a great place to test the powder and with so many other things on site you’ll feel like you’re in a winter wonderland when you take a break from the slopes. Along with restaurants and bars, you’ll find over 25 shops ready and waiting to indulge your retail therapy urges. Feel fully part of the season by picking up some skates and heading to the skating rink – practice your twists, lifts, spins and turns; or skate hand-in-hand with your other half.
